The Benefits of Biophilia

Biophilia, a strong decorating trend, is all about bringing nature indoors. In fact, houseplants and organic materials (such as wood, stone, terracotta, and natural fibres) are becoming more and more prevalent in home decor. In addition to their undeniable aesthetic appeal, indoor plants provide health benefits by reducing stress and improving air quality. We love to add them throughout the house, from the bathroom to the kitchen to the entryway to the bedrooms.

White: The Perfect Match for Plants

White is a pure, neutral colour that goes with almost anything, including plants, which in turn add colour and personality to a space. Since it is a good light reflector, it is also an ideal background for plant growth. In addition to making the space appear more open, white accentuates any plants in a room by creating a nice contrast. If you’re having trouble choosing, read our guide on how to pick the perfect white paint colour.

Designer Tip

Warm whites are best for complementing a space with several plants. Avoid whites with green undertones, which will make the space look too green and cold.

Plants in a room with earthy colours

Earthy Colours: An Ideal Pairing

To accentuate the "organic" side of a space, we love to combine green plants and earthy colours. With its brown and pink undertones, terracotta perfectly complements indoor plants while adding warmth to the space. Since orange is a complementary colour to cooler hues like blue and green, rust is perfect for highlighting a plant—especially a variety with dark green foliage. Latte brown creates a natural and relaxing atmosphere while accentuating the green of the plants.

Aquatic Shades: A Relaxing Combo

Also reminiscent of nature, shades of blue are a great complement to indoor plants. Without overshadowing the plants, they create the impression of being outside. While seafoam creates a bright, relaxing space, navy blue can bring a refined, bold look to any room.

Designer Tip

You might think that shades of green should be avoided for spaces with multiple plants. On the contrary! Mint green, sage green, and forest green walls create the impression of entering a lush jungle. If you live in the city, these colours can create a peaceful haven reminiscent of the forest.

Our Favourite Colour Palettes

Here are our 3 favourite palettes to showcase indoor plants:

An Organic and Soothing Palette

This Mediterranean-inspired palette is perfect for creating a natural, elegant, and casual setting. Add a few plants and let yourself be transported to Greece or Tuscany! We suggest ivy, ficus, or dragon trees.

A Rich and Enveloping Palette

Give your home the look of a luxurious mansion with these rich, enveloping colours. They work especially well with plants that have theatrical foliage, such as monstera, birds of paradise, or ficus.

Pro Tip

Since dark colours reflect less light than lighter shades, your plants may not get enough light exposure when there is less sun. If you notice that your plants are lacking vitality, consider moving them or adding a light with a grow light bulb.

A Soft and Romantic Palette

With its pale and soft colours, this palette is well suited to small or less well-lit spaces. Enhance the brightness by choosing plants with lighter leaves, or create a contrasting effect by going for plants with darker foliage.
