Get the Look: Airy Open-Concept Living and Dining Room

This week on Le grand chantier RONA, Team Red created an airy open-concept living and dining area blending the contemporary and vintage styles. We love the wall decoration that doubles as a TV stand, with its trendy wainscot panel and hidden storage. Read on to find out how to recreate the look at home!

The Inspiration for this Airy Living Space

With its wood accents and neutral colours, this open-concept dining area and family room is a natural extension of the kitchen. We love how the soft, curved shapes of the furniture and light fixtures contrast with the clean, straight lines of the accent wall made of shiplap. The result is an airy, contemporary space with a retro vibe.

A Cohesive Colour Scheme

The colour palette for this open room design is composed of light, neutral hues highlighted by darker accents: a combination that gives the room a timeless elegance. Since these spaces are frequently used, we opted for Sico Prestige, a super premium paint with a washable finish.

This Week’s Must-Haves

With their neutral shades, wooden legs, and soft, durable fabrics, the chosen pieces of furniture offer both comfort and style while adding vintage flair to the room. The matte black and brass accents of the light fixtures add a hint of sophistication.

Decorating and Defining an Open-Concept Space

Designing an open floor plan can be a daunting challenge! But by following a few golden rules, you can create a living space that’s bright, welcoming, and airy:

  • Extend the flooring for a unifying effect.
  • Create a mental separation between different areas by placing furniture and accessories (such as an area rug) appropriately.
  • Unify the space by recalling colours, shapes, materials, or textures from one area to another.
  • Ensure good lighting with different types of fixtures, mirrors, and light colours.
  • Add a focal element to each room, such as an accent wall, a bold pattern, or a statement fixture.

This Week’s Challenge

This week, Team Red rolled up their sleeves to take on a tremendous challenge: bringing to life a TV stand that doubles as an accent wall, with a wainscot panel as well as hidden storage! This project adds depth and texture to the space while creating a focal point and a strong architectural detail. To complete this type of project, meticulousness is key: they had to plan properly, measure accurately, check that everything was level and square, and add the finishing touches with care.

Pro Tip

When decorating open shelves, it’s important to add objects—such as houseplants, frames, and decor—sparingly. Opt for a minimalist look, with a few curated pieces, to give the space personality while avoiding clutter.
