This week on the TV series Le grand chantier RONA, Team Red tackled the open-concept basement. The contestants created a casual space featuring a living room and lounge area, with a trendy board and batten-style accent wall. Read on to find out how to recreate the look at home!

The Inspiration for this Casual Space

Casual doesn’t have to mean ordinary! With its soothing colours, cozy furniture, multiple cushions and blankets, and sheer curtains, this family room—which doubles as a TV room and sitting room—combines comfort and style. The stars of this open-concept space: the two accent walls made from scratch by Team Red.

A Neutral and Timeless Colour Palette

The shades chosen include soft greys with subtle green undertones. For the board and batten-style wall, the grey chosen is slightly darker and warmer.

A Practical and Aesthetic Space Division

As with the open-concept main floor, Team Red decorated and furnished this family room in a way that ensures consistency from one zone to the next. There’s continuation in the flooring, as well as in the colours, wood accents, and furniture. The team also created a mental separation between the different areas by adding a rug and strategically positioning the sofa.

Recessed Lighting That Enhances the Look

In the basement, getting enough lighting can be quite a challenge. Opting for recessed LED fixtures is an excellent solution. In addition to producing even, diffused lighting, they are easy to control with a dimmer. All that’s left to do is add ambient lighting with the help of floor lamps and table lamps. If your basement includes a home office or a workshop, don’t forget to incorporate task lighting, such as a work light.

This Week’s Challenge

Team Red tackled the challenge of bringing not one, but two accent walls to life! Although less complex than some of the other tasks they’ve had to complete to date, these projects required planning, patience, attention to detail, and time. The half-wall with floating shelves was very similar to the one in the main floor living room but the board and batten accent wall, created with mouldings, was entirely new to the team.
