How to Create a Chevron Barn Wood Wall
Learn how to install a barn wood wall in a classic chevron pattern to add a unique on-trend touch to any room. This is a project that requires patience and precision. Let’s get started!

Before You Start
This step is optional, but for a better result, remove the moulding so that you can install barn wood over the entire wall. Use an oscillating tool to cut the ends of the moulding, then slice through the latex seal with an all-purpose knife to easily remove the moulding without disturbing the moulding on the other walls.
Pro Tip
As it’s rare for a floor to be perfectly level, find the highest point of your floor and use it as a starting point to keep your design level. There may be a small gap at the bottom in some places, but don’t worry—it will be hidden by moulding once the project is finished.

Cut and Install the Full-Length Planks
- 2.1 - Cut all planks to a length of 4’.
- 2.2 - Cut the ends of the first two planks in accordance with the chosen angle. (In this case, we’ve chosen a 30° angle.)
- 2.3 - Install the first plank along the guide line, based on the location of the highest point of your floor. To make assembly easier, place the tongue pointing upwards.
- 2.4 - Fasten the plank in place by nailing along the tongue at an angle. Make sure each nail is flush so that nails don’t get in the way of the next row.
- 2.5 - Apply some glue to the joint edge.
- 2.6 - Following the guide line, install the second plank.
- 2.7 - Draw two new guide lines with a level.
Pro Tip
The first two planks must be perfectly aligned, as you will use the ends of these planks as a guide for the rest of the project.

Measure and Cut the Shorter Planks
- 3.1 - Line up the first outer plank with the corner of the wall, placing it over the centre plank that is already installed.
- 3.2 - Draw a cut line on the outer plank according to the guide line.
- 3.3 - Cut the plank at the angle chosen at the beginning of the project.
- 3.4 - Install the plank by following the previous step.
- 3.5 - Starting from the centre, continue the installation of the centre and outer planks, making sure all new cuts are facing the wall.
- 3.6 - To ensure the assembly is solid, use glue between the joint edges and fit the planks together tightly. If necessary, gently tap the planks into place with a scrap piece.
Pro Tip
Is your work starting to look a little off-centre? Don’t worry! Just keep installing planks, relying on the centre joint created by your planks. It won’t be noticeable once the project is finished.

Measure and Cut the Bottom Planks
- 4.1 - Measure the required length for the bottom planks.
- 4.2 - Line up a scrap piece along the centre guide line.
- 4.3 - Place another scrap piece on the floor up against the wall and draw the angle to be reproduced, then cut along the cut line.
- 4.4 - Use this angle template to draw the cut lines on the last planks, placing the tongues in the right direction for assembly.
- 4.5 - Reverse the angle template for the planks on the other side of the guide line.
Pro Tip
If your floor is very crooked, double-check the angle and repeat the process before securing anything.

Measure and Cut the Top Planks
- 5.1 - Measure the length between the last plank and the ceiling and draw a cut line on the plank.
- 5.2 - Use the same process as above to find the cutting angle.
- 5.3 - Measure the correct length of the plank and cut along the two cut lines.
- 5.4 - For the angle near the wall, cut at a 30° angle.
- 5.5 - Keep cutting and installing until the wall is completely covered with planks.
- 5.6 - Add finishing moulding at the bottom.
