Unbelievable results!
TL;DR This soil grew grass from seed in 7 days...in the heat of July!
I am excited to share my remarkable tale. My husband and I are renovating an old century home, and there are numerous landscaping choices being made. Long story short, I needed to fill a few small depressions in the lawn, and grow new grass along two strips.
I know the necessity for good quality soil. Sadly, when asked to pick some up, my husband brought home a cheap, popular brand. Opening the bag, it was almost indistinguishable from the acres of black mulch we have. I was reminded why I swore-off that brand, years ago.
I had recently chopped-back a huge hedge 2-3’, which now needed the area below to become lawn (approx. 80’ x 2-3’), plus a bunch of holes, plus the swath along the property line. Because I hand-water grass seeds at least once a day, every day, for the first month, it was in my best interests to do as much seeding as I could, at the same time. (I did also install an underground sprinkler system, but don’t rely on it when it comes to seeds/new sod.)
This was late May. I fell into a routine of early-morning waterings, only to realize it had been around 4 weeks, and still no grass. Knowing the new soil was awful, I went to buy my usual favourite organic brand, so I could start again. (I was pretty annoyed by all the wasted time and effort.) The store was sold out of that brand, but an employee pointed out that a bag of Sunshine soil had been damaged and was wrapped in a plastic bag, thus discounted half price. I didn’t know the brand, but went by the employee’s enthusiasm, and purchased it.
When I was re-soiling/seeding the areas, a neighbour came over to chat (a fellow gardening enthusiast), and admonished me for even trying to grow grass from seed, now that it was so hot.
Usually, I dismiss concerns like that, as the average homeowner puts down seed/sod, waters once, then wonders why it didn’t grow. I know that most plants just need some sunlight and adequate watering, to do fairly well. (If you choose to do more, then you get even better results.) ...Adequate watering being the key. I said as much to my neighbour, but the comment concerned me, as my neighbour is experienced.
The particular stretch I was referring to had been revamped, since my first attempt. Initially, I was simply trying to raise the level of the soil a bit, and grow new, healthy grass, where it had been mostly weeds. With the month-long fiasco behind me, my new plan, with the new soil, was to aggressively raise the height even more, which extended the growing area around it, too. So, there was now 4+” of Sunshine soil on top of the old (cheap, failed) soil.
Anywho, I was dutifully watering my Sunshine soil and grass seed mixture every day, sometimes more, and was soon in disbelief... There was grass in no time, and not just baby grass hairs, but recognizable-from-a-distance grass blades. No, not a mature lawn, but real grass! It had been 7 days since my neighbour cautioned me. I couldn’t resist showing him the unbelievable results! Grass! ...In 7 days! I believe this soil is the main reason why. I even remember another neighbour mentioning how humus-y it appeared, as though it would hold a lot of water.
Today, I’m here looking at stock in various stores, as I want to stock-up on Sunshine before winter, to not only continue with ongoing projects, but to ensure I can get the best, earliest start in the spring, before most stores open their garden centres. I don’t want to be seeding in July & August, again! With no reviews, I wanted to share my experience, and why I’m such an enthusiastic convert.
On a related note, I decided to leave one of the holes with the old soil, and just reseeded it, to see what happens. It is now October. Still not a blade of grass, there. Curiously...not a single weed, either. ...Just a bare, wood chip and twig-filled dark patch in the lawn. Crazy that stuff is allowed to be sold as “soil”. When even weeds won’t take root, you know something is wrong.
