Worked for awhile
I bought this drill in July it worked great until it didn't. I took it back to where I bought it but they said I needed my receipt to warranty the product. I feel their should be a better way to track warranty in today's day and age. I have my wife looking for that receipt but that is probably going to cost me as much as the drill. I putting yes on the recommendation because of lack of information. Dewalt should add a maybe button to this page.

Great drill
I purchased this just a few days ago, and I have already used it several times. Very solid feel. The metal chuck is a nice feature, you can feel when the bit is firmly locked in. I have been wanting to replace all of my old 18v Dewalt tools, but I was a little leary. Not so anymore, if the rest of the line is as solid as this drill, I will definitely buy them too.

Great BUT!!!!
Starting with the bad. Keep in mind i don't like this drill and I'm rating it 4 stars of 5. The missing star is because it's Achilles heel. I'll talk about that first so you don't do it. NEVER EVER EVER run the drill at high load AND run the batteries dead. You can do one or the other (it's never suggested to run lithium ion dead) but not both it'll cook your drill. There's no thermal or over-current protection. The motor takes the abuse perfectly and wasn't even hot on disassembly. But the ESC can't. How do you avoid this? If you're running high load (ie 8in SDS screws in 3rd gear), the drill handles it fine (why i rate it so highly) BUT!!! As soon as the battery goes to 1 bar, grab the battery on the charger, cool the discharged battery with a vacuum or blower (it will be too hot to start charging) for about 20sec right at the terminals, place discharged battery on charger, continue working with the fully charged battery as the used one charges. I ran this drill for days driving 5-8in SDS, extreme abuse like this, and it ran perfect. Amazingly powerful and durable. But, i lent it to a coworker to do the same. He ran the first battery dead, ran the second battery dead, and the drill was dead after the second battery. To avoid killing your drill under high load, stop using the batteries as soon as they get to one bar.
Now for the good. Avoid the Achilles heel and it's an amazing drill. The electronic "clutch" is AMAZING!!! the main reason this drill scored so high with me. I'm used to mechanical clutches from older drills that make the ratchet noise when they reach the torque spec of the torque setting. Driving regular screws, you can dial in the clutch to stop at the correct time. You will have to come back with the impact to touch up some of the screws but driving 8in SDS screws in 3rd gear then coming back with the 1/4in impact for a few that are between 1/8in-2in out vs burning up an impact or slowly throttling a corded drill, it's amazing and 3-4 times faster that corded or an impact.
Another plus is the sheer torque this puts out. I STRONG discourage anyone from using the drill bit setting in 1st gear without the side handle. The amount of torque this drill has in 1st will snap three 1/4in shaft on a nut driver. Driving #4 Phillips screws 3-5in long, i needed length and stepped ther bit holder from 5/16in to 1/4in and snapped the 1/4in shaft. And not at the skinny part of the shaft that was on the chuck. Ther actual hex 1/4in shaft. Oops.
So, learn to not run batteries below 2 bars (gets to one bar, charge it) and the drill will take as much abuse as you can throw at it. This is actually what you're supposed to do with any lithium ion/ lithium polymer batteries and Nickle Cadmium batteries. So this isn't just a Dewalt Achilles heel. But you buy such a heavy duty drill, think it can handle anything, and find this out, you'll be upset like myself. Don't make that mistake and you'll be amazed with this drill. It basically cuts the cord for drills.
Picture was to find the failure point. Motor is perfect. It was the ESC (the electronics in the white caulking behind the trigger). Definitely going to rebuild this when i can get another ESC.
