How to Restore Patio Furniture with Spray Paint

Has your outdoor furniture seen better days? Has rust set in and made it lose its shine? Or do you simply need a change and want a new colour for it? Learn how to restore it on a budget using spray paint.

Before You Start
If you don’t have a sander, you can use sandpaper to prepare the surfaces you want to paint. You can also replace the TSP cleaner with soapy water.

Prepare the Materials and Furniture

  • 1.1 - Clean your patio furniture using TSP cleaner.
  • 1.2 - Cover up every part that you’re not painting:
    • Table: Apply self-adhesive film to the entire glass surface then trim the excess using a utility knife.
    • Chairs: Apply masking tape over and under the straps or weave.

Sand Down the Surfaces That Will Be Painted

  • 2.1 - Sand down the paint surface so the new paint can bond properly.
  • 2.2 - For rust:
    • Clean the rusted part using TSP cleaner.
    • Brush it with a thick-bristle or metal brush to remove as much rust as possible.
    • Apply a primer.

Apply the Paint

  • 3.1 - Wipe off any dust using a rag.
  • 3.2 - Put your furniture on a tarp or drop sheet.
  • 3.3 - Slide a spray paint can into the spray grip gun then apply the paint.

Pro Tip

For an even finish, hold the can at a fixed distance, making smooth, continuous motions.
