Storage: solutions for the bedroom

Bedroom storage has one main preoccupation, and that is clothes: seasonal clothing, folded clothes, clothes on hangers, shoes, accessories, short clothes, long clothes. The needs are as varied as the solutions for storing your clothes efficiently.

First consideration: your needs. A real fashionista with heaps of clothes obviously needs more space than someone who makes do with the basics. Take into consideration the type of clothing as well: short, long, folded, hung up, etc.

You can maximize your closet space using your choice of the many storage options available, such as:

• Modular storage;
• Adjustable shelves;
• Original design storage.

Particularly useful are:

• Shelves, and lots of them, to put away folded clothes, shoes, and accessories such as hats and gloves;
• Drawers, ideal for undergarments, socks, jewelry and accessories, as well as folded clothes;

• Hooks installed on doors, interior walls and corners;
• Racks and holders of all kinds, from clamp hangers for pants to organizers for shoes, ties, and jewelry;

If the bedroom closet isn’t big enough, you may want to consider some other options:

• Create a ‘walk-in closet’ space in the bedroom using a room divider such as a curtain or wall if necessary.
• Opt for cabinets covering an entire wall; this type of storage permits all kinds of combinations and can be personalized to suit your own tastes and needs.
• Add pieces of furniture such as a dresser, an armoire, or a desk that combines drawers and cabinets.

There are also solutions available to optimize storage in your drawers:

• Dividers, which eliminate clutter by creating designated spaces for individual objects;
• Boxes and compartments of all shapes and sizes.

For clothes you use on a daily basis, like a bathrobe, nightwear or loungewear, hooks on the inside of the bedroom door or in a discreet corner are handy and practical.
 

Cosmetics, body creams, jewelry and other personal items can be stored in a dressing table with drawers, a dresser or cabinet. Put smaller items together in compartments or small plastic containers to avoid messy confusion.

Night stands are also useful for small personal items such as jewelry, magazines or a book.

If you can designate a dresser drawer for small items and clothing, install separators to divide the space: a compartment for each category of objects, such as socks, ties, belts, scarves, jewelry, and souvenirs.

Kids’ bedrooms should ideally have a functional element, a study corner. To set this up, you’ll need:

• A work table with drawers;
• A bookcase or a number of shelves;
• A comfortable chair;
• Appropriate lighting.

Storage for small and larger desk items should include:

• Containers for pens and pencils, paperclips, glue sticks, etc.;
• Boxes on shelves to collect larger items of various shapes, such as a calculator, a geometry set and hobbies and crafts materials;
• Book ends, magazine rack;
• A bulletin board, ideal for tacking up notes, schoolwork and artwork.
   

With some imagination and ingenuity, you’ll soon realize that storage possibilities for the bedroom are infinite.

For bedding and seasonal clothing, you have a number of discreet storage options:

• On the top shelf in the closet, with seldom used items put away in boxes;
• Under the bed, in storage units or bins;
• In a chest that doubles as a seat;
• On a bench at the foot of the bed or beneath the window, with complimentary boxes or baskets.

Attractive wall shelves abound with possibilities. Use your imagination to come up with an original installation design, and display some of your favourite knick-knacks and ornaments, a few books, and some pretty boxes. It will look great, and you’ll gain some attractive storage into the bargain.
To maintain a peaceful and relaxing environment in the bedroom, clutter must never gain the upper hand. Well-organized closets and armoires will go a long way, and other storage solutions can be added when and where they’re needed. In drawers, on the walls, under the bed: storage space in the bedroom is virtually everywhere. Choose wisely and integrate your choices into your decor.
