ANother update
Completely removed the canvas shade. It just is not worth fighting with it in the wind and having to take it off all the time. The rope worked for awhile (see earlier review) but eventually failed. We actually bought 5 pieces of white pvc lattice (8 ft x 4 ft) from lowes and laid it on the top of the pergola, tied it down on the slats with some white nylon rope, and this work really well. the wind can go through the lattice holes so it doesn't move and it provides ample shade. just as an extra for me, i bough four curtains and placed them around the pergola for added shade when needed. It actually turned out great.If we were to buy a pergola again I would NOT buy one with a canvas shade, this material was way too heavy and was alot more trouble than it was worth. There are other models now that have more slats with material weaved in and out, that is what I would buy

Update from earlier review
Ok 1. you need wood posts to place inside the pergola post2. if placing on a patio the wood posts must be cemented into the ground about 2 - 3 feet 3. If on a patio do not use the bolt down brackets they will not secure the pergola properly it will sway alot in any wind and eventually in short order pull up your patio (this happened to me within 3 months)4. the canvas shade cover is a great feature, that being said in any kind of wind it becomes a sail and will bounce around violently - our solution was to place stretch cord on top from one post to the other like a spider web, this allows the canvas to be pulled from side to side, but in the wind the cord prevents it from bouncing up and downwe should have secured it in the ground in the first place, it is much better now, save yourself money by not buying the bolt down system and save your self grief by cementing it in the gound, looks great.As a note a couple of pieces broke because of the swaying and the tilting, I contacted New England Arbors by email, and I have to say they were exceptional in their response. we received the replacement parts in less than a week at no charge

Not Great
Looks nice initially when installed. We had it professionally installed, and used their bolt down bracket system. Not a good idea as it sways if there is any bit of wind, and it is currently leaning to one side and pulling up our patio stones. The shade canvas is great unless there is any type of wind. Several times it lifted right off the pergola and it eventually tore off the stabilizers and broke them on the side because it bounced around so violently, it does this in any type of wind.

Cheap
Bought this in the summer of 2013, had it professionally installed using wood in the legs and the bolt down bracket system. Any little of bit of wind it sways back and forth, and I don't mean a little bit. Today had a wind and rain storm, the cover flew up and took the stabilizer with it - broke it right off, and some of the slats on top too. Now the whole thing is leaning to one side and will most likely fall down completely. Really regret buying this product, it has had nothing but issues
