Disappointing. Read on...
I was very happy to be updating the front of my home as the front porch was unfinished and weathered. I had asked my father to look into what might be the best option as I was only familiar with Rustoleum products and wanted to ensure I chose the best option for covering my concrete porch and stairs. My father had done some research and advised that Daich Coatings had received positive reviews, and was a local company located in Hamilton Ontario. As the reviews were good, and I prefer to buy locally when possible, I chose Daich Coatings products for the project.
With the help of my father, we carefully prepared the surfaces as per the recommendation from the manufacturer, and then applied the waterproof membrane (we had asked speicifically about areas with exposed rebar and were advised to apply the membrane as per the manufacturer's instructions – that being said in advance we even parged over the affected areas long before applying the membrane). Bear in mind, I am no stranger to home improvement, nor is my father (a retired home inspector and engineer), and we both know the importance of asking questions and following instructions precisely. Within the recommended time frames we then applied the "rock" coating and the anti slip sealer. I was very impressed with how easy the process was. The porch looked so much nicer than it originally had.
Fast forward to winter, and a rust spot began to appear on the lower step of the porch. Slowly over the course of the winter, the rust stain spread across a large portion of the step surface and down the front of the first step. Despite attempts at scrubbing and cleaning, the rust spot was unable to be removed. The rust had spread underneath the surface of the anti slip sealer and presumably above the rubberized coating (as there should be no way that any rust could penetrate that layer - also when looking at "before pictures of the steps, it was obvious there was no metal that had ever been exposed in that area).
When my father contacted the company (as he had purchased the product at my request), they suggested that something may have been dripping onto the surface but because of where the spot was positioned, this would have been impossible as nothing was overhead of it to drip, and again, the rust spread from under the anti slip sealer and above the elastomeric coating. As no metal tools were used in the application of the product at any stage, I can only think that there may have been a speck of a metal contaminant in the "rock coating". Furthering proof of this, at this point the rust is now efflorescing THROUGH the anti slip sealer at the point of "contamination", but nothing can be done to remove the rust stains that have spread throughout the stairs underneath the surface.
Despite repeated communications to resolve this issue with the company, they have been less than cooperative, to say the least. They have remained obstinate saying it cannot be their product and must be our fault, despite all of the information provided above. Because they will not seem to stand behind their product and provide the small amount of product that would be required to attempt to correct the issue in the affected area, I am relegated either unnecessarily paying the cost of a much larger amount of their product than I need (and hoping that it does not have the same issue), or doing the project over from "scratch" with a competing project - both costly and expensive propositions.
Thus, I would recommend that ANYONE thinking of these products from Daich Coatings take my story as a precautionary tale and take into consideration that sometimes using a trusted larger brand with better customer service and issue resolution may be the best bet, especially in a scenario such as this.
