Self adhesive not working well on painted surfaces
I used this product to cover painted melamine cabinets in our kitchen. I sanded the cabinet surfaces but without removing the paint, then used an iron as instructed, full power, directly on the veneer and with a lot of pressure. The veneer initially adhered but after a few hours it started to delaminate. Examination showed that the glue did not bond with the substrate. I decided to strip the glue off the veneer; it came off relatively well using lacquer thinner brushed on the adhesive side. I then used low-odor contact cement, carefully lining things up since each piece had previously been cut to match the substrate shape. The nice thing about this particular brand is that the veneer is relatively thick and was able to endure the rework process without developing any cracks. The result with the contact glue was just fine, the veneer adhering nicely. I stained the veneer and apply a Varathane finish. The end result looks great.
Conclusion: unless it is applied to bare wood I would rather use the veneer with no adhesive and use contact glue.
