if you plan to install light fixtures in the ceiling can you still use this product as sound insulation?
Yes, you can use ROCKWOOL insulation when planning to install light fixtures in the ceiling. ROCKWOOL is a popular choice for sound insulation due to its excellent acoustic properties, as well as its fire resistance and thermal insulation benefits. However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind to ensure that the installation is done correctly and safely:
Cutting Precisely: You will need to precisely cut the ROCKWOOL insulation to accommodate the fixtures. It’s important to ensure that the cuts are snug to maintain the insulation’s effectiveness while also fitting around the electrical boxes or fixtures.
Avoiding Overheating: Ensure that any light fixtures installed are compatible with direct contact with insulation or that there is adequate space around the fixtures to prevent overheating. Check the manufacturer's specifications of the light fixtures to see if they require a certain amount of clearance from insulation materials.
Fire Safety: Although ROCKWOOL is non-combustible and has excellent fire resistance, it’s still crucial to follow all electrical codes and safety guidelines. Make sure that the electrical installations are done by a qualified electrician and that any heat-producing fixtures are installed in a manner that mitigates fire risk.
Maintaining Insulation Integrity: When cutting and fitting the insulation around fixtures, try to maintain the integrity of the insulation as much as possible. This will help preserve its acoustic and thermal performance. Consider using acoustic sealants or specialized insulation covers (sometimes called fire or insulation covers) for recessed fixtures to enhance safety and effectiveness.

Perfect for Every Project
I have been using ROCKWOOL since it was Roxul! I’ve long been a fan of ROCKWOOL Safe’n’Sound because the stone wool batts are an effective solution for reducing unwanted noise from neighbours, tenants, or your kids! This ROCKWOOL product is also great for added fire protection between floors, in income suites, or in interior walls throughout your home. Plus, it’s DIY friendly for a quick and easy install. I’ve trusted ROCKWOOL Safe’n’Sound insulation to create safer and quieter spaces for my shows and personal projects for years!
Disclosure: I am a long-standing ambassador of ROCKWOOL and its stone wool insulation products and have previously received products in-kind. Although compensated for my role as an ambassador, my review is based on my first-hand experience using ROCKWOOL products and on my belief in their performance and benefits to buildings and occupants. I regularly used ROCKWOOL stone wool insulation products prior to establishing an ambassador relationship with ROCKWOOL. This review reflects my own honest opinion.

So far great
First time using this and I am impressed with the sound barrier it provides. The piece of mind knowing that it helps slow fires is also a great benefit between the two duplexes. Will definitely recommend to others.

Went from a few walls to the whole house
Hey everyone. My name is Chris. We're building a house and I'm addicted to installing interior insulation. It started with insulating the walls between rooms. Then I thought, "We should do the ceilings above our bedroom and bathroom, which is under the loft and our son's room." Then it was, "What if someone goes upstairs to use the bathroom and we're having a fancy dinner party and hear them above?" Then it was, "If I do the ceiling for that reason, we might as well do around all of the bathrooms." "If I'm going that far, I should do every area that makes sense because there isn't much left."
As soon as the insulation went in you could the dampening of the sound in the room. We haven't moved in yet, but I'm very satisfied with the change already even before drywall. After we move in we'll also do the basement ceiling. Great product!

3 inch Safe N Sound is hit and miss at best
Before I sound like I'm ranting, the other products offered such as 2x4x16 R15, the 2x6x24 R23, and the 2x8x16 R30 are fantastic products and I would 100% use again due to the ease of use and good quality. We used a mixture depending on need for our remodel and loved all the above products.
However, the 3 inch 2x4x16 Safe N Sound had absolutely no rigidity. We were unable to purchase the 2x6x16 version for some of our needs because of a severe shortage going around this year and we were lucky to get what we did, for an arm and a leg of course. For floor separation (1st and 2nd floor), we doubled up the 3 inch so it would be 6 inch, but leave the required air gap to help deaden sound. This product has two problems in this scenario. 1) It fell apart and kept falling out of the ceiling leaving our drywallers constantly complaining about the insulation being poor quality and in their way and 2) there is no sound reduction at all. We can here every foot step, cough, etc, even with doubled up and required air gap.
The next use case was room separation (walls of shared rooms). This also constantly fell out of the walls and we had to attempt to use those metal insulation bars that attempt to hold stuff in. Our drywallers were trying to hang drywall and its falling out of the wall at them. Absolutely zero rigidity and fell apart like blown-in insulation was in-between our 2x4 studs.
I don't know if this was a quality issue and we got a bad batch, but the 3 inch safe n sound product is something I will never use again. I'd opt for the 2x4x16 R15 even for interior applications due to its rigidity - even if its not appropriate for sound cases where it requires an air gap.
For the final application, I'm currently redoing the garage ceiling. The leftover R15 and R23 works great! The leftover bags (yes, we have multiple bags because we stopped using it) are barely holding together, but I'm attempting to make it work rather than throw it away wasting money. It is tearing/falling apart simply taking it out of the bag - even when you are extremely careful. If you don't hold it properly towards both ends, it will sag and fall apart as you climb a ladder to put it in the ceiling. It looks great sitting on the floor until you pick it up.. then it tears in half as I go to put it in the ceiling.
Maybe we received a poor quality batch, but for us the 3 inch version was a poor quality product.
