Power house drill
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Have owned it for almost a year now. Never had any issues with it. Use a 6 ah battery or a 8 ah and this drill will plow through anything you put it up against. I also love the hammer function. Although I don't use it as often as the drill mode it works great when I need it. Better to have and not need them need and not have. DeWalt never seems to let me down. Mostly use for automotive work but also carpentry to. Only thing I dislike is every time I get the latest and greatest something newer and better comes out. The cycle never ends

Best Drill!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have been using Dewalt for 20 years in the electrical trade. This hammer deill specifically is my favorite. The 3 speeds are amazing for masonry tapcon installation and or drilling holes in studs for residential wiring !!

Thought I loved it
This hammer drill does a great job with all the power you could ever want, and it seems to run forever on a 5-amp battery. I really like the shaft brake; it's the quickest I've ever used, and the three speeds make it very versatile.
The down side is that the chuck keeps loosening and my bits fall out. I don't know if it's from the torque of the shaft brake, or something else. A drill that won't hold a bit is a really great boat anchor, but it's not helpful on the job.

Side handel too long
Mine came with a side handle that had an extra 4 inch tube between the handle and clamp making the whole thing too long. I could take the extra tube out and then it was the right length but now I have to find a new bolt. Why was the side handle made so long?

Incredibly powerful drill.
I have the DCD996 and now this DCD998W1 power detect hammer drill/driver. While I can not talk negatively in anyway on the 996, but this drill is definitely a refined upgrade to the 996. While they both share a similar look and feel, the 998 looks a little more polished and feels a little more comfortable in your hand. But the biggest difference is in power, side handle, and sound. This drill seems quieter, while being much more powerful. It also seems to have better air flow which seems to keep it cooler vs the 996 while doing the same tasks(ie mixing 60 lbs of mortar mix in a 5 gal bucket) using two 8 ah batteries, one on the 996 and one on the 998, the 998 can run longer and perform more work on one charge vs 996. So there seems to be some advancement in energy consumption. This is now my most favorite drill. It's definitely a good upgrade, especially if you need max power and efficiency. Btw it's still loud in hammer drill mode, but when you have to drill a few dozen 3/8s to 1/2 inch holes for rebar or all thread it's worth it when your buddies drills are quieter but much slower. I'd buy this drill again in a heart beat.
