Description

Excellent anchor
I have been using these for many years. I learned about them from my father when I was about 6. The 1/4" and 3/16" sizes are used where many persons use toggle bolts. These are better. For one, the anchor is captive in the wall, so the hung item can be removed and reinstalled (example, when painting). Another reason: one does not have to use the bolt that comes in the anchor. One can use a bolt with a different head shape (eg, flat-head). One can also use a shorter bolt if appropriate. I have used this size mostly for mounting hand grip bars because of the high pull-out strength in the wall (I try to catch a stud, but the stud is not wide enough for all of the screws. I have also used this size to mount plywood on a wall framed with steel studs to mount a large TV (the stud become a large washer!). This style of anchor comes in a variety of sizes with 1/8, 3/16 and 1/4" bolts. They also come in a variety of lengths to accommodate different wallboard thicknesses (make sure you get the right range). The package label indicates the thickness range for the size in the package and also the proper drill diameter.
I have also used one of these as a temporary security anchor. Replaced the bolt with an eyebolt with a nut on it. Turned the nut hard against the anchor. Steel cable to attach an item. Watched some guy try to pull it loose until building security took him away.
Another size that is particularly useful is 1/8XS. Ever try to mount something on a hollow core door? The door skin is too thin to properly hold a screw. The 1/8XS is perfect. Bathrobe hooks, towel bars, anything you want on bathroom and bedroom doors.
The anchor is often set by turning the bolt to compress the anchor. However, there is a tool that can be used. It functions a lot like a pop-rivet or jack-nut tool. I prefer the setting tool.
I ordered this product online because the 1/4L and 1/4S sizes are rarely stocked.
