Brought in for consultation, Lexie is referred to a neurologist at the Centre mère-enfant Soleil du CHU de Québec. A series of tests will reveal, six months later, that Lexie is affected by spinal muscular atrophy type 2, a degenerative disease that attacks nerve cells. Without motor neurons, the brain is not able to transmit signals to the muscles, and the muscles, unable to function normally, atrophy.
Aurélie and Patrick are in shock. The disease is incurable and specialists can not comment on Lexie's life expectancy. They explain to the parents that, little by little, their little one will become prisoner of her own body. Aurélie and Patrick are upset.
